This is one of the best fantasy books I have read in a long time. It has elements of classic fantasy novels, but it also finds it's own path. It is NOT your Harry Potter style kids book. It is intense, gritty, brutal and bloody. Sharp doesn't sugar coat the battles and he doesn't baby his characters. In fact this is one of the few books that I really didn't know who, if anyone, was going to survive. It is as tragic as it is epic, which makes for a great read. The short stories at the end are also a nice touch. I also like the fact that Sharp doesn't fall back on magic to get his characters out of trouble. But when it is used, it is always to maximum effect. I think the characters define the magic, not the other way around as in many other fantasy novels. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a new twist on fantasy.Product details
